Keeping things simple is harder than it looks. This layered paper collage has undergone several changes as I have tried out some elements, struggled with it, then took them out again. The challenge I have given myself is to use as few elements as possible to tell a story. After a somewhat frustrating day yesterday, I think this morning I have cracked the secret to what this collage wants to be. I still don’t know how it will end up, but there’s less sitting and staring at the canvas than yesterday.

A recent assignment to make a house in a collage class I am taking particularly resonated with me. My dad was an architect and made dollhouses. I have been trying to incorporate some of this in my artwork, but had not figured out how. I think I have begin to find a way in to these structures. Last week, I made some sketches. This is my first attempt at an in-depth collage. I don’t really have a plan - just trying to respond to the objects I have already glued into place. I think this is nearly finished - I like the sparseness - though it does need a few more details before I call it done.

I would love to hear what you think about this new direction.

Work In Progress: Girl Holding a Lobster 8" x 10" Collage

Here’s a peek at my newest collage. She needs a name, still, but the image is a girl holding a lobster. I’m using hand-stamped and altered paper cut and pasted onto an 8” x 10” x .75” canvas. I still need to add some facial features, hair, antennae on the lobster, and maybe a few other small details. This collage will get several coats of varnish and a wire on the back for hanging before it’s done.

I also have another Girl Holding a Lobster (image below). The original is 20” x 24” and, as of this post, is available for $675.00, plus tax and shipping. Please contact me for availability. It is also available as a greeting card.

I am making progress on my 16” x 20” collage featuring a flowers and a vase with a winter scene in the window. This collage is made using pieces cut from paper I hand-stamped with acrylic paints. I will be adding leaves and flowers on the branches. More images to come.

It was snowing up a storm in Maine yesterday when I started this canvas. I decided to make the scene in the window a winter one. My favorite part was flicking paint off the end of my brush to make the snow. I will, most likely, be adding flowers and a vase in the foreground. I will keep you posted.

Here’s a finished 11” x 14” collage: Queen Anne’s Lace in Blue Vase. You can see other collages available for purchase in my shop, here. Gift cards are now available, here.

Still in the Process of Discovery

There comes a point in nearly every collage I make where I like it how it is, but it doesn’t feel finished. So, do I press on and risk messing it up? Yup, usually. And, much of the time (but not all of the time), pressing on means a better result. When I started this, I knew I wanted water, fish, and flowers, but that’s it. The discovering of what colors to use, what shapes to cut, and the arrangement of the pieces is all part of the process. Do you hit these roadblocks in your work? What techniques do you have to overcome those roadblocks? I’d love to hear about it.

Collage Work in Progress: Finished the Background, Installed the Window

Yesterday, I started working on this 20” x 24” collage. I finished the background layer, including the window, which overlooks a mountain scene. Today, I will be adding some more details - a vase, some flowers…not sure what colors I will go with at the moment. The tedious part is over. Adding details is always the fun bit!
