Introducing "Janyce Collages": A Zine About Collage
In researching the history of collage, I came across scrapbooks and zines. Both have long traditions and share certain qualities with collage.
Zines, which are essentially mini-magazines, caught my imagination. Broadly, they are self-published booklets covering a wide range of topics; a hybrid, if you like, of a diary, magazine, art journal, photo album or whatever the author/illustrator brings to the design table.
I am both excited and a little nervous to be presenting my first ever zine to the public. In this first volume, I present a brief introduction of zines, rant a little about the inferiority complex collage seems to have in the art world, review a book on collage, and provide an insight into some of the symbolism and techniques I have collected over time and connected with my past. Also included: color images of my collages—some made just for this zine.
It has been fun to put this zine together. I am still learning about page layout and the printing process. There were more steps to putting this zine together than I first imagined. I will get better with practice! I plan to produce a zine at least monthly throughout 2018.
Janyce Collages is for sale for $5, plus postage. I listed a few in my shop, here. I just got back from the printer with the first, small batch. This is an open edition, so if supplies have run out, please do contact me so I can let you know when they become available again.
