Angels of Anarchy: Women and Surrealism (September 2009 to January 2010)
A bit of art history.
Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism was an art exhibit sponsored by the Manchester Art Gallery held September 2009 to January 2010. The show featured 32 woman artists with “surrealist inclinations” and included paintings, sculptures, photography, collage and other artwork highlighting the “outer and inner worlds” of female experiences.
The show included works from artists Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Claude Cahun, Francesca Woodman, Meret Oppenheim, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning, Eileen Agar, Leonor Fini, Ithell Colquhoun, Edith Rimmington, Marion Adnams, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Penny Slinger, Toyen (Marie Cerminova), Rachel Baes, Elisa Breton, Emmy Bridgwater, Nusch Eluard, Josette Exandier, Jane Graverol, Valentine Hugo, Greta Knutson, Jacqueline Lamba, Emila Medkova, Grace Pailthorpe, Mimi Parent, Valentine Penrose, Kay Sage and Eva Svankmajerova.
Angels of Anarchy, curated by Patricia Allmer, won the Tourism Experience of the Year award organized by Marketing Manchester.
