Home Grown Artist Discovers Collage!
I was sitting on the couch one snowy Maine day in 2014, flipping through YouTube when I stumbled upon a video that depicted collage not just as a craft to do with kids, but as a finer art. Collage as wall art? Wow! What a discovery! My mind was racing a mile a minute!
Before the video ended, I saw how all my previous work as a quilter, print-maker, painter, photographer, and writer--17 years as a professional self-guided artist and business owner--could come together in one medium. Collage brings the pieces of my artistic life together: patterning, color, texture. What could be better?
Throughout my years as an artist, I have participated in many retail shows in Maine, including Designing Women, Common Ground Fair, and the Artisan Bread Fair, sold wholesale to retailers throughout Maine and New England, including Anthropologie and Stonewall Kitchen, sold online through shops like Etsy and Fine Art America, taken 300+ hours of entrepreneur training, and managed the business end of an art business.
But, nothing beats the slower pace of working in my own studio and connecting with customers in more personal ways.
My original artwork is not mass produced. The photographs I take on walks through my neighborhood serve as starting points for my compositions. I especially love the trees, ferns, and any flowers in my yard that the deer will not devour.
I hand-carve many of the stamps I use to print on paper. The designs often echo the antique lace patterns from my quilting days or motifs inspired by the Ukrainian egg decorating technique I learned in college. The prints I make are unique and contain beautiful imperfections.
Each collage carries with it a memory of the people, places, and creative influences that help bring the collage to life on canvas. Through my artwork, I seek to explore a deeper meaning, a deeper connection to the themes of nature that I so love.
It is my hope that you will find the Pinecone and Sparrow art collage that perfectly resonates with you and your own cherished memories. And, when you do, I am here to help make the transaction a smooth one.
